Where it is

Just over the bridge from the city

Bathwick sits on the east bank of the river, over Pulteney Bridge from the centre of Bath. At the bottom is Great Pulteney Street, the widest and grandest Georgian street in the city, running from Laura Place to the Holburne Museum and Sydney Gardens. From there the area climbs Bathwick Hill towards the University of Bath and Claverton Down, getting greener, quieter and more expensive as it goes.

There are really two Bathwicks. Down on the flat, around Great Pulteney Street, Sydney Place and Henrietta Street, it is Georgian townhouses and flats, a few minutes' walk from everything. Up the hill, on Cleveland Walk, Bathwick Hill and the roads off North Road, it is large detached and semi-detached houses with gardens and views back across the city.

Green space

Sydney Gardens and Henrietta Park

Sydney Gardens, opposite Jane Austen's old home at 4 Sydney Place, has the canal running through it. Henrietta Park is the quiet one, and Bathwick Fields and the Bath Skyline walk are up the hill.

Getting about

Walk almost everywhere

From Great Pulteney Street it is a few minutes to Pulteney Bridge and about 12 to Bath Spa station, with trains to London Paddington in around an hour and a half. Higher up, buses run along Bathwick Hill to the university.

Culture

The Holburne and the Rec

The Holburne Museum closes the end of Great Pulteney Street, and Bath Rugby's Recreation Ground is on the Bathwick side of the river.

Schools

Primary to university

Bathwick St Mary Church School is the local primary. Prior Park College, King Edward's and Monkton are all within reach, and the University of Bath is at the top of the hill.

Homes

Georgian, Victorian and new

Georgian flats and townhouses on the flat, Victorian villas up the hill, and newer homes at Holburne Park and Bridgetower Drive.

Community

Quiet, but never far from town

Bathwick is calmer than the centre, with the shops and restaurants of the city a short walk over the bridge.
